Blog Cheating

It feels wrong. Doing something similar with another party. I'm not the victim, I'm the one that acted upon it. I've never been the victim in a case like this and I'm very thankful it's never happened to me. This must be what the mop in the Swiffer commercial feels like.

Yes, I've decided to pack up my bags and move to a new blog. *sigh* I'm working on it as we speak and I'm very excited for it! It's something much more custom and something I feel will scream my personality which is very important to me. When it's ready I'll start posting up there and probably take my favorite posts with me.

But like I said, I feel like a cheater. One window has my new blog open and in edit mode all the while here I am in another window typing in an entry. But I've got to keep blogging! I can't help but do it. Sorry, blog, I hope one day you'll forgive me. It's not you, it's me. :P

Thanks Blogger! You've truly been good to me. You'll move on, I'll move on. We both know it's for the best.

D&G Wedding: At Last

I know I'm late on posting this. 6 months after their wedding and I'm finally writing about the famous D&G. Why do I say famous?! They had the biggest wedding I've planned to date. Over 300 people!

All of the clients (and later friends) I make from planning weddings is nothing short of a blessing. I have been fortunate to work with amazing people, both vendors and clients. These guys are no different. Deb, George, Charlie, and I have become friends after all their wedding planning and I couldn't have been more lucky to meet them. The day started off with Deb and George at separate locations: Deb being a the Mac headquarters in El Segundo and George at their hotel in Downtown LA, minutes away from their ceremony location.

The day quickly went by and here I am on the way to the Cathedral in Downtown LA to set up, drop off flowers, and get the first festivities of the day going! This Cathedral is an architectural gem, what a beautiful sight to see. It definitely takes your breath away. Their ceremony was beautiful. Seeing Deb walking down the aisle was breathtaking. I always get teary-eyed when that moment happens. I could feel the mood of the room and looking at George as he saw his soon-to-be wife walking toward him in that beautiful dress...you can just tell he didn't want to be anywhere but in front of that alter and waiting for her to reach him.

These 2 know how to throw a party! The reception was one to remember. Nothing but eye candy everywhere you look. The CBS Studios in Studio City was the perfect setting. After the photos at the Cathedral, they made their way down the 101 freeway on their super rad double-decker bus! And yes, you heard me, I said RAD. :) With a few photo ops on the bus and all over the CBS set, these guys were anxious to get the party started! Did I mention that these guys worked the camera?!

While they took a few photo ops at other sets at the studio, the guests began to arrive and what a sight for them to see! The "New York Street" set was the setting of many shows such as CSI and Seinfeld and their out of town guests as well as the local guests were completely blown away! So many details, so many personal touches, so beautiful! Deb even wrote a song for George and used it for their same day edit.

Congratulations D&G. I'm happy to call you friends. Thank you for letting me and Daydreamer Events be a part of your wedding day!

Chito Solomon: My Dad

As I've said in the past, I'm a daddy's girl. I know it all too well. Every one says I'm a spitting image of both my parents. I don't know if it's just me, but I didn't appreciate hearing this from people in the past because I wanted to be me, not a person that resembles other people. But I have to admit I'm starting to see it. The more time passes, the more I see them in me.

I get my wisdom (what wisdom I have) from my Mom. Many people go to her for advice and somehow, she just knows what to say. She's a wonderful listener and a great friend to many. She's an accomplished business woman and a hard worker.

I get my passion from my Dad. He's the type of guy that puts everything on the table. When he commits to something, it's always 110%. If something isn't done properly, he'll roll up his sleeves and do it himself. He's always been that way. He wants the best, to live life to its fullest, work hard, and reap the rewards. I've written about my Dad in numerous posts, mainly "Happy Birthday Daddy!" He's someone I look up to very much and last week, he has proven once again to me that he's a force to be reckoned with.

This week he was, once again, published in a magazine for his amazing car collection but this time was different. I remember this shoot. My whole family went to Las Vegas for the weekend of Thanksgiving 2009 and he stayed behind. He's not much of a Vegas kind of guy but he stuck around LA mostly because he told us someone was doing a photo shoot for his cars at our house. We've heard it before as his cars have been in different print magazines, online magazines, blogs and forums before. We didn't think much of it, until now. It turns out, my dad has been waiting for an opportunity like this for a long time. This is the first time a magazine has covered ALL (okay not all, there's actually more if you can believe it lol) his cars in one article. Not just his Euro cars, not just his Japanese cars, not just his go karts...all of 'em. Even the rare parts he's got in our 2-car garage at home that aren't attached to any moving vehicle.

UK based Retro Cars Magazine published a 7-page article about my Dad in their March 2010 issue. Reading about my Dad couldn't be more strange to me. Knowing that he's made a name for himself in his community is surreal and definitely a goal I have for myself. Reading the article made me so proud of him. Proud to know that his passion for cars has brought him places, proud to know that he's well-respected, proud to just be his daughter.

Congratulations Dad!! I'm lucky to know you and be your daughter. I couldn't be more proud. :)

Valentine's Day: Love me or Love me not

Love me or hate me for this post, but I'm not a big fan of Valentine's Day. Don't get me wrong, I live for romance and I'm lucky to be in love. I love Charlie more and more every day and I hope that he knows just as I know that we love each other more than anything. He's an amazing person, fiance, son, brother, and friend. Charlie, my love, thank you for everything you do. I love you.

But I'm just not big on Valentine's Day, anymore at least. I used to be like everyone else. I counted down the days until the 14th would roll by. I'd plan months in advance and put outrageously tacky thought into my gifts. And I'll admit, I loved every minute of it! But then something happened, a realization I guess you can call it. I don't need anyone to tell me what day to show someone I love them. I don't need a special day to give them a gift, surprise them with something special, or send them flowers. I should be showing everyone I love with my appreciation for them being in my life all the time, or at least, more often than 1 time a year.

So I did a little research on Valentine's Day and no one even has any concrete history of the date. The Catholic Church recognizes multiple martyrs named "Valentine" and have some idea of what had happened, but isn't sure about what really happened. One says that Valentine used to marry couples secretly when marriage was banned for young men with the intent to recruit them as soldiers instead of marrying a wife. Another legend states that a prison member fell in love with the daughter of his jailer and before was killed sent a love letter to her and signed it "from your Valentine."

Ok, that being said it gives me less and less validity of this holiday. Especially if it was to honor a saint and has now turned into a commercial holiday where people don't even know the history about.

HOWEVER, if Valentine's Day helps reignite the love you have for another (or others) I wish you a Happy Valentine's Day. Don't forget the love that you share today. May you remember the love and continue to show it through the rest of the year. :)

It's Me: Kissa w/ a Re-invention

So 2010, so far, has been what I like to call "eh." Everyone has struggles and just like everyone I've got a handful of my own. I'm taking everything with a grain of salt and trying to work every day toward the dream I like to call "my life." I'm a dreamer after all right? So here's what's in store:

After much self-contemplation and evaluation I've decided I'm in a rut. I need to re-invent myself, keep things interesting. I need that x-factor, that extra something that's missing. So on my road to re-invention, I've decided to get educated among other things. :)

1. Hopefully this Spring I will be working toward something new, something exciting. Helping me not only with my personal re-invention but also further my education in something I really do enjoy: BUSINESS.

2. I used to be so afraid of what people think. I still am in certain ways, but not as much as before and I have my re-invention to thank. During the time that I starting really looking at myself in a different perspective I told myself that I needed to take off the rose colored glasses. See what I liked about myself and what I didn't like about myself. See what I was willing to change and not willing to change. And let's face it, this is never an easy task. But I needed to get past that. I had to realize that what I see is what I get and if I wanted to change anything it's better now than later. The more I put it off, the more difficult it'll be for me to change. So I took a deep breath, and here I am.

3. Every bride...well not every, but many of us...want to lose weight before their wedding right? I'm no different. My family has a history of health problems and since I was a little kid I've been fighting to keep those problems away. It's sad for me to say but I realized that after a certain time in my life, my appearance didn't seem to matter much to me anymore. I wouldn't wear make up unless needed, in college I'd roll out of bed and wear sweats to class, and mind you, I love getting dressed up...or at least I used to. So I have decided that I will begin my quest for a healthy and attractive lifestyle.

I know people think I must be crazy for adding more onto my plate, but new things make it exciting. In my opinion re-invention is just a part of life. We live in a world where we move fast, rely on technology, and the concept of "the next big thing" is hanging in the balance. For me, keeping up with that momentum that the world is running on is so much fun and it's what makes it so interesting. The world is changing right before our eyes, let's do it too. Let's do it by doing the things we've always wanted to do, by not wishing and hoping and actually taking action, by seeing the best of ourselves and working hard to be just that. The rest will just fall into place, right?

A Dreamer's Guide to Life: Leadership

I'm just going to put it out there..I'm not an expert. I don't know everything there is to know about leadership. But I've learned from experience, through trial and error. I think the real life experience and the things I've learned from watching others are much more valuable than anything.

Doing my research on the concept and definition of leadership was pretty sparse. All the definitions that came up had the root word "lead" in it which, in my opinion, doesn't effectively help someone to understand the meaning. But from what I saw, everyone had their own unique way of describing what leadership is. Alan Keith of Genentech states that, "Leadership is ultimately about creating a way for people to contribute to making something extraordinary happen."

Being a leader isn't easy, but it's definitely worthwhile. The feeling you get when you know that you have that kind of impact on a concept, a person, a thing...it's unexplainable. It's one of the best feelings knowing that you not only impacted the lives of all involved, but they impacted yours in a different way. Every person I have ever met and had the pleasure to meet has helped me. So whether you think you're a leader or not, in your own way you probably are.

There are "leaders," and there are "followers." Some people are born leaders; they just need to find it within themselves. There are some people that are just meant to do those things. They know the right things to say. They know how to time everything just right. They know how to bring people together. They know how to make people listen. Whether you are a leader or a follower doesn't matter. If you're a leader, be a great leader. If you're a follower, be a great follower. Those that lead can't do it without your presence.

So, here it is. This is just the tip of the iceberg...

You've got to listen first and then speak second.

Be yourself, no holds barred.

Be objective rather than subjective.

Be neutral.

Inspire others as you've been inspired.

Share the wealth, nothing is a secret.

Keep learning to be better.

Consider yourself a "follower" with more responsibility.

You don't always need to be "the strong one."

Be strict and understanding.

Think about others before yourself.

Earn your respect, don't expect it.

Recently, I partnered with Envelopments as another option for invitations and stationery. I have been a big fan of their items for a while now and have recently made a decision to become a dealer for them, and I'm so happy I did! I received their design studio a few weeks ago and love the way everything is laid out. The moment I received it I couldn't help but skim through the books and all the information. I'm so excited to add them to my services.

A Dreamer's Guide to Life: Business pt. I

Yet another topic I can write (and talk) about forever...yes, EVER! Business. After all, it's the "American Dream" right?! Well, I don't know if it's the "American" dream, but it's definitely a dream of mine and many other people. Business is what makes the world operate. Meaning it's what provides people with jobs, education, items that we need to survive, and more.

Business: n. the practice of making one's living by engaging in commerce

I'm all about business. I live, think, breath, and dream about business. I love talking to business-minded people, hearing what they have to say, their ideas, it's all very exciting. I own 2 and help operate a third. I've even got another one on the way! Why do I love it so much? Because possibilities are endless. You can make anything a business. As long as there is a need, you've got a business. And that fact with such an open ended answer is something that drives me. Crazy? Yes, some times. Actually, many times. But in my opinion, all of it is worth it. So, you interested? How do you get started?

1. Have a concept. Believe in that concept. As long as there is a need, your business can thrive.
2. Name your business. It can be straight forward, it can have hidden meaning. As long as it's not too difficult to pronounce, you're good. :)
3. Write a business plan. This is a very, very important step to your business's success. Many people think that writing a business plan isn't necessary because their business is "small" or they'll figure it out when they get started. WRONG. Having a plan for your business, no matter how small or large, will spearhead you into the right direction. Sure, I'll admit, the unexpected can (and probably will) happen. You might even fall off track or need to update your plan, that's okay. Hire a business consultant to write it for you if you have to. Just make sure you read it. :P But outlining your goals for the start-up of your business will be a key component to your success. Trust me on this one.

Okay, let's stop there. That's enough to keep an entrepreneur busy for a while. Really think it through, take it seriously right from the get-go. Don't "see how it goes." Put yourself on the track for success. Think big in the beginning and push hard to achieve it. It starts with believing in yourself and what you have to offer the world. And believe me, you have a lot to offer. I know, I know. I sound cliche and over-positive, but I'm not lying.

Happy New Year! New Year, New Life

Ok, I know. It's already the 12th and I'm only now greeting everyone a happy new year. But to my defense lots has been happening in the past few months. With that being said, forgive me? :)

The year has started and I'm ready for it. This year I can tell is going to begin an upward climb for myself, but also for many other people. And I'm happy to say it! I've already begun to make things happen, but have been praying for continued guidance. And boy am I getting a response! So far, 2010 has been treating me well and I'm very thankful for the positivity around me. It definitely keeps me going.

This past Friday was my mom's birthday. We didn't get to celebrate like we normally do. My mom loves to be a great hostess (I guess that's where I get my party planning skills from). We normally throw a little get together at our house and have the family over, but with the shop being open and all the hard work that she does on top of that we had to have our own little celebration with just immediate family. As a tradition, we always make noodles as a sign of long life so we all had some for my mom.

Mom, happy birthday. You're a beautiful woman: strong, giving, motivated, hard-working, and loving. I hope to be just as wonderful as you are one day. I know that many of the traits I take pride in are from you. Learning from you and seeing how hard you work motivates me to do the same. I love you.

One of my groomsmen, Ray, also shares my mom's birthday. I've only known this guy for almost 4 years, but he's one of those people that I feel like I've known forever. Ray was actually the first person (besides my parents and Charlie's parents) that found out Charlie and I were engaged. Ray Ray, happy birthday. You're a shining light to everyone that you meet. You've always been a great person to look to for guidance, loyalty, a shoulder to cry on, a good laugh, and so much more. Thank you for being such a great friend. I pray for you every day.

I found out on Christmas Eve from one of Ray's best friends that he was admitted to the hospital. A few days later, we discovered he was sick and had leukemia. It hit many of us very hard. Such a wonderful person now battling this horrible disease. I know many of you out there know the feeling. Those that know someone or is battling any type of cancer knows the every day battles. I now know 2 people (and families) that have suffered from the disease of leukemia.

Ray's brother with the help of family and friends is throwing multiple events, first being "A Ray of Hope Bone Marrow Donation Drive." For those interested in becoming a donor, not just for our friend Ray but for anyone suffering you can easily register with the National Marrow Donor Registry.

To all those that celebrate another year of their life, happy birthday. It's such a blessing to be alive. I am grateful for everyone's presence in my life and pray for your continued presence every day. I wouldn't be the same person without you.

Yay I'm Engaged! Now What?!

Congratulations to all the fellow engaged couples! Welcome to the engagement club, it's going to be a fun and memorable ride! Your fiance proposed, you said yes, you've told your parents...now what?! So for those that are in the beginning stages of their engagement, here are a few tips to get you started.

1. Choose your wedding date. Maybe not necessarily a specific date, but a time of year/month is good. When you're ready to shop for locations you can give the catering/venue manager your ideal dates.
2. Throw an engagement party. Let the festivities begin! Celebrating is the funnest part of getting engaged/married. Sharing this momentous occasion with the ones you love will create lasting memories of togetherness and joy.
3. Send an announcement. Not many people do this on its own anymore, but many people usually combine this with the Save the Date card or use social networking (Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, etc.) to spread the news.
4. Discuss your budget. Or in my case, lack there of (haha!). This may be difficult, but putting the numbers together will be one of the most important parts of a successful wedding (and successful planning). Ask/discuss your families (if this applies) how much they will be contributing.
5. Hire your Wedding Consultant. It takes a lot of time to plan a wedding, having a planner there to help you will help you feel at ease. Even if it's just for the day-of.
6. Start thinking about your wedding party. Best Man, Maid/Matron of Honor, Groomsmen, Bridesmaids...who are you choosing to play a special role? Make sure it's someone that you can trust, depend on, and knows you best. They'll be helping not only on the wedding day, but maybe even before that.

Glancing Back at 2009

I believe that if you don't learn from the past, the future isn't going to be much different. There's no improvement without a little reflection and action. After this personal reflection, I am definitely making some meaningful resolutions for the upcoming year. 2009 was a year of roller coasters for me, but I'm more than blessed to be alive, healthy, and in the presence of love from my family and friends. God has been truly good to me. So, my dear 2009, thanks for everything. These memories will bring everlasting gratitude and warmth to my heart.

First and foremost, this has been quite a year of transitions. This year, I resigned from my position of Administrative Director for VENT Dance Group. It was a very difficult decision for me to make as the people that have been, are still, and will be part of this group remain near and dear to my heart. Relinquishing control is something very difficult for me to do, especially with this group. The success of the team and the success of the individuals that have come and gone means very much to me. I have learned so much from being a leader and dancer for this group and I am very grateful. I now hold the proud title of "Advisor" and will forever love this team, my family. You guys have made the past 3+ years of my life fun, exciting, and rewarding. I'm looking forward to continually being part of your lives and the future of our team.

October 2009 completes that 1 year anniversary of the opening of Ninong's Pastries & Cafe. My parents and family own this little shop in Granada Hills. We have invested our time and money because we believe we have something good to offer the public. The bakery has definitely brought my family closer and I am so thankful for this blessing. It's a dream come true for my family and I'm so happy we are living it. With time and dedication, I know the success for my family and our little bakery will pay off. I love you all very much!

In 2009, I have been blessed with new, existing, and old friends. I've reunited with some, gotten closer to some, and even drifted apart from a few. Regardless of our current status, you are all still my friends and I value everyone's friendship.

On April 1, 2009, Charlie and I celebrated our 5 year anniversary. And shortly after that, we got engaged (as my blog, twitter, and FB followers already know)! I am a very, very lucky girl to have found such a wonderful person to love. He has made my days brighter, my smiles bigger, and my heart beat faster. I'm so thankful for his selflessness, understanding, faith, and overwhelming love. Being engaged to Charlie has made me the happiest I've ever been and I owe it all to him.

Life wouldn't be complete without its downs, and I am also very thankful for these blessings in disguise. Every day has its own ups and downs, some bigger than others. Because of the lessons I've learned in the past years, I've learned to take them in stride. Continue to live on, be a student of God, always believe that there's a plan. You just have to believe that it's there.

Dear 2010, I look forward to what you have to bring: good or bad. Please be as kind as possible, though. :) I'll be speaking with you again shortly.

White Christmas Inspiration Board

It's 2 days before Christmas. Usually by now, I'm already in the Christmas spirit. I'm trying, believe me, I'm trying. But regardless of sprit, I'm thankful for everything the Lord has blessed me with this year and I can't wait to give everyone their presents and seeing their faces light up. That's the part I love most about Christmas anyway. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone! Whatever holiday you celebrate, do it with love.

A Dreamer's Guide to Life: Goals Pt. II

In continuation to my long-ago-post about goals.... so you've written down your goals? Let's make sure these goals are your REAL goals. Ask yourself the following questions:

1. Will these goals make you happy?

2. Will your goals be of benefit toward your future and not just momentary satisfaction?

3. Will your goals not only benefit you, but others as well?

4. Do you believe enough in yourself to make these goals happen?

Having goals is one thing, but being active and continually giving yourself opportunities is the bulk of achieving them. Knowing and understanding what you have to do to achieve a goal is an integral part in success. Sitting and hoping isn't going to cut it. You need to be brave, seize every opportunity, do research, and work hard. Success very seldomly happens overnight (and if it does, it's very short lived). That being said, let's break this down a little bit.

As an example, I'll use my goal of wanting to make a difference to break down how I believe will help me to achieve it.

I. My lifetime goal: Make a difference in the world.

II. Things I want to achieve that will put me closer to this goal: 1. Become a public speaker. 2. Teach. 3. Volunteer my time.

III. What can I do now to help make it happen?: 1. Begin writing my "Dreamer's Guide to Life" blog, meet with clients and make presentations, be a leader. 2. Teach dance classes, train employees, apply for teaching positions. 3. Helped start a not-for-profit dance group, help my family at their bakery, volunteer at events.

This is just a shortened version, but you get the idea. You always want to start with your ultimate goal, and work down. Figure out what you can do to achieve that goal, and what you can do NOW to make those things happen. While you might be doing things now, you should always look and be open to new opportunities, adjusting, and change. Maybe there's a new opportunity that will come along down the road. Consider adding those things to your list, or maybe replacing it with another. Goals are subjective, and they can always change. Nothing is concrete.

One thing to remember: RESEARCH! Doing research in things you want to pursue is very, very important. The internet and literature are great resources to help find statistics, opportunities, internships, jobs, information, and guidance. You should always go into something well informed about the topic.

Last thing, don't worry about what everyone else is doing. The most successful people in the world (yes, the WORLD!) took a chance on themselves; regardless of other people's thoughts and opinions. They knew that what they had to offer was of value and never looked back. They didn't follow the crowd. They didn't let set backs get them down. They persevered through it all. It might be a long road, but believe me, it'll all be worth it in the end.

My Holiday Wish List

Happy Holidays to all! I hope the season has been kind to everyone and has brought much excitement and anticipation for your time with friends, family, and loved ones.

It's been a while since I've blogged mainly because I've decided to make most of my presents this year so the added to-do list has taken much of my time. But enough of my excuses.

It's always been a tradition of mine to reflect on the past year around this time and by the new year, I would have a list of goals and resolutions to fulfill for the next year. This year, I've decided that I would add a "wish list" if you will of things that I want for the holidays. And no, it's not tangible items (well, at least not all of it) :)

Here it goes. I wish...

10. ...For a shiny new bike. (not really, more like a shiny new anything haha)

9. ...That things got just a little bit easier.

8. ...For a sign that I'm on the right track.

7. ...For a nice, relaxing massage.

6. ...(actually I hope) to get all my presents done in time for Christmas.

5. ...For people to remember the magical time of the season is about love, life, family, selflessness, happiness, and the joy of giving.

4. ...That whatever religion or holiday people celebrate, to really reflect on what the holidays mean to them. Forgetting the presents and reflecting on where their holiday tradition began and why they celebrate it. Remembering what this holiday means to my faith and religion has made me re-think my conceptions of Christmas and the Holidays.

3. ...That through these difficult times brings family and friends closer rather than farther apart.

2. ...For God's continued guidance toward success and happiness.

1. ...For everyone's good health and their prayers to be answered.

To everyone out in internet world, Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas from me! Maybe your days be full of peace and joy.

Happy Thanksgiving!

To all the bloggers, fans, friends, and family out there, Happy Thanksgiving! This is the beginning of my favorite time of year, the Holidays! My top 10 reasons why:

1. I see my family more often.
2. Everyone is in the giving mood.
3. Disneyland is the BEST this time of year with the decorations, music, and weather.
4. Great food.
5. Christmas songs.
6. Friends and relatives you don't see often come into town.
7. Hot chocolate with whipped cream.
8. Vacations.
9. Presents.
and my ABSOLUTE favorite reason why it's my favorite time of year:
10. I get to put up the Christmas decorations!!!! It is, by far, the most exciting part of the whole thing. Ever since I was a little girl, that was my favorite part of the holidays. Putting up the decorations with my family never got old. We had the same old decorations every year (with the exception of a new thing or two) but it was the thought of being together, seeing the house come to life with the spirit of Christmas...that was the best part.

DIY: Doable or Unrealistic?

I always get asked this question. Since I'm a wedding planner, do I believe in Do-It-Yourself projects? Answer: ABSOLUTELY! As long as you have the time and commit to the projects. In every single wedding I've done, there has been some degree of DIY. Some people make their own invitations, decorations, centerpieces, linen overlays, etc. and I love that part of the planning. Not only is it a challenge, but it's also a chance for us to get creative.

Noel and Beverly's Wedding Favors. Their wedding was so much fun! Not to mention, it was in Hawaii that made it that much more spectacular. C_O Nuptials in the Beginning Phases

I told myself that since I'm more of a digital rather than paper (plus my attempts to "paperless" to do my part for the environment) I'd blog about my planning experiences for mine and Charlie's wedding.

Charlie and I haven't done too much wedding talk yet because the wedding is so far away (did I mention the date yet? 10/8/11) but we are talking about the things I know take a long time to get. Even though we haven't started planning in full swing yet, it's definitely "Commitment Central" around my family and friends. Charlie and I have been searching for a house for the past few months and are hoping to find one soon. Finding a property that we could call ours means so much to us because it's our first real step toward our future. It's definitely a turning point for both of our lives.

That being said, I've already put my wedding book together with a list of all the necessary checklists and budget sheets, I've hired one of my coordinators, Eder, to be my wedding planner, and I've started on the guest list. It's so weird to be on the receiving end of all these documents. And I'll be the first to admit: IT'S NOT EASY BEING A BRIDE. I've known that for the get-go, but I'm really starting to realize it now. As a planner, all I did was give my clients lists, guidance, advice, and ideas. I'd chat with them every week or so to check on them and help them with research. But I've never had to make the decisions, and do all the nitty-gritty.

Charlie is in semi-wedding mode too, he kindly designed our logo for the wedding (and I didn't even have to ask him to). To read more about his design, check out one of my past Fancy Friday posts: Creating an Identity.

So for now, what's on the agenda? Priority #1: House hunting. I want to be settled in by summer of 2010 so that I have time to work and start planning. Priority #2: Engagement Party. We're planning a casual engagement party for 10/8/2010. It'll be a nice way to get the wedding festivities going. Priority #3: Enjoy our time as an engaged couple. Enough said. :)

Bridal Showplace, Hilton Pasadena

In collaboration with my family's bakery, Ninong's Pastries and Cafe, my aunt, my mom, and I were exhibitors at the Bridal Showplace Show at the Hilton Pasadena this past Sunday. It's been a long time since I've done a bridal show but this show was a lot of fun!

The weeks prior to the show were definitely hectic. On top of preparing for both booths, I was trying to not only juggle my work at the shop but also my coordinating business. My mind was racing with ideas and I really wanted to make both booths scream creativity.

The Ninong's booth had 3 cakes that I prepared, all 3 with a different design. The first was an all white 4-tier made of fondant (left). Every other tier had a hand-ruffled pieces while the other 2 tiers were a simple fondant covering with an elegant drape going from one side to the other. Finish it off with coordinating brooches and you're done! The second was a 3 tier ivory fondant with green accents (right). The simple piping design was meant to be elegant , not taking too much attention away from the design of the cake. To give the the cake height, I added a cylinder vase and added some battery powered candles to give it some flair. The main attraction of the booth, our brown and white brocade piece (middle). This 5-tier topped with large white gerber daisies was made of chocolate brown fondant and white royal icing to give it its bold, unique look.

I wanted to do so many things with my space. I had so many ideas and I couldn't decide on which one to do. So, I decided to make the most of my space and do it all.

I wanted to create different tablescapes with 6 different concepts. So since I didn't have the room to do that, I made miniatures. The first was a tropical/beach theme with a modern flair. The second was an orange and red "country" theme. The third, a vintage old rose/dark purple. Fourth - a modern/bold black, white, and green. Fifth - a simple yellow, ivory and lavender color scheme. And sixth, in the corner of my booth (but still surprisingly got lots of attention) an all while glamorous table scape filled with candles, an all white centerpiece, and beautiful flatware and dinner set that speaks for itself.

This was definitely a learning experience. Things have changed in the few years that I've been in the wedding business. This was the best response I've had at a show to date. Thank you to everyone that visited our booths! We hope you enjoyed what you saw and will be working with you soon!

DE at Bridal Showplace - Pasadena Hilton

Daydreamer Events, in collaboration with Ninong's Pastries is exhibiting at Bridal Showplace this Sunday at the Pasadena Hilton! It's been a long time since I've done something like this but I'm very excited to show people what I'm about.

We've been running around all week preparing our booth, collecting images, buying all the odds and ends to hopefully transform our booth into a sight to see! Fancy Friday: Creating an Identity

The 2 year mark has passed for Charlie and I. It's official, we've set a date and have started talking about wedding/future related things. Charlie and I had a conversation last night and he told me that he's seen me in this mode before, "wedding mode." He says I always get this way when I start planning a wedding. Normally he doesn't care much, he knows it's just my job. But this time, I guess he wanted to get in wedding mode too since it's our wedding this time. So he decided to design our logo for the wedding to get into "wedding mode" himself. Thank goodness he's a talented graphic designer. :)

I'm not sure if it's because I have a graphic design background, but I think it's so important to have a logo identity or "symbol" that represents you as a couple. Why? Because not only can it be used throughout your design for the wedding, but it will give guests, family, and friends eye candy to remember you by. A well designed logo or monogram will make it easy for you to identify all aspects of your special day and tie in a design throughout the wedding. Here are some examples:

Our logo is still in development as far as color goes, but this is the final design.

Our initials (C and O) created the heart and the ring design that is the main focal point. The serif font creates the diamond on the ring and the bow tie at the bottom.

Debbie and George, my D&G couple, is a wonderful example of how you can take a concept from a logo design and use it as the running piece throughout your wedding.

Their Dolce and Gabana inspired monogram not only was a beautiful design that reflected their modern/chic style, but also gave them inspiration to use a fashion forward/hollywood theme to their wedding. Not only in their invitations and stationery but also a press wall for photo ops:

And that's just the beginning!

Here are some suggestions to a good wedding logo:

1. Think outside the box. Great design happens when you go beyond what you've already seen.

2. Be yourself. Let the logo speak about you and your style.

3. Don't try too hard. Let the design come to you.

4. Don't be afraid to play around with concepts.

5. Hire a professional. Someone that has a graphic design background can get your point across effectively.

Fall weddings are absolutely beautiful! The weather is perfect, the leaves are starting to change color, and it's almost time for the holidays.

Fancy Fridays: Green Wedding Ideas

One of my good friends, Heather, is one of the main peeps in charge of a great non-profit organization called Tech Go Green. Check 'em out, they're pretty amazing. She e-mailed me this week about getting involved with the organization in a little way, and I couldn't be more thrilled to help. Hopefully I'll be able to contribute somehow.

There are more and more services and products available for couples getting married that are Earth friendly. I'm a believer of trying to preserve our Earth and to do what we can, no matter how small, to help the environment. Here are some great "Green" wedding ideas:

1. 100% recycled paper for stationary. There are many options for recycled paper at your local paper store. Or, ask your printer/invitation designer for their recommendations for effective Green options. Check out these invitations from MewPaperArts on Etsy.

2. Eco-friendly party favors. I've coordinated events with great Earth-friendly favors. Personalized-planted thank you cards (check these out form Beau-Coup) or lucky bamboo favors (sold by DE for $5.00 each)

3. Venue selection. Hold your ceremony in a beautiful outdoor setting, at 4:00 when the light is beautiful (and not too hot!). Try to hold your ceremony and reception in the same venue so your guests won't have to drive to 2 locations. Use candles to set the mood and save on electricity. Check out this beautiful photo from Elings Park in Santa Barbara. This is a beautiful location! I've made many site visits there and it's a wonderful place to have a wedding!

A Dreamer's Guide to Life: Goals

NO GOAL IS TOO UNREALISTIC. I firmly believe this is true. But the real question is, DO YOU? When people are in their adolescent age, they don't even blink when thinking about this concept. Everyday after school, you run off and play "house" or "doctor." The next day, you want to be an astronaut, teacher, firefighter, dancer, etc. The next day, you want to be something else. What's wrong with wanting that in your adult life?

We want to be all kinds of things. We want a career, we want a family, an exciting life, money, hobbies, etc. All things that we believe can make us happy. I want you to know: those things are attainable. People out there are having the time of their lives living out their passions: restaurant owners, actors/actresses, professional athletes, writers, competitive eaters, race car drivers... Each one has their own road to success, but they got there. It's not just about the money (don't get me wrong, part of it is) it's about the enjoyment that comes along with it. The accomplishment you feel once you're going through the motions.

I'm a goal oriented person. The strive and want to hopefully one day meet my goals is my life's passion. For example:

1. I don't want to have just one career. I believe life's too short for me to focus all my time on only 1 thing. I want to be an entrepreneur and be many things, a "Renaissance Man" if you would.

2. I want to make a difference. This is a broad subject, and purposely, because I'm not quite sure yet how I'm going to go about doing this. Maybe my Dreamer's Guide to Life series will do that? We'll see.

3. I want to be an inspiration just like those who have inspired me. I want to inspire by positivity, success, endurance, hard work, words, and actions.

These are just some goals out of my hefty list, but you get the idea.

So, the point. If you ever feel lost, feel like you don't quite know what you want to do, make a list of things you want to do and achieve. It doesn't matter how unrealistic you think it is. Attainability is all in the mind. If you don't think you can do something, you probably won't. If you actually believe you can, you're more likely to make things happen. Give yourself a chance before you rule it out or quit.

Fancy Friday: The Big Picture

Things aren't always as complicated as they seem. Including weddings. Yes, there are many tiny steps to achieve what I like to call the big picture and yes, it's a long road with hard work to get there. But as long as those steps are taken properly it's smooth sailing. I bring this up because I think the chemistry of vendors has a direct effect of the success of any event. Without the proper communication between vendors and clients (as well as vendors and vendors), the big picture is difficult to achieve.

There are a lot of gray areas where vendors will overlap. Maybe your florist will be placing a fresh-flower cake topper on your cake: overlapping. Maybe your videographer needs to plug into your DJ or band's sound: overlapping. Maybe your photographer needs a certain amount of lighting from your venue to capture good quality photos: you get the idea. The list can go on and on.

Word of advice, when considering vendors, do not just think about their chemistry with you but with your other vendors. I love meeting new people so I enjoy working with new vendors. Most of the people I've met in the wedding business are the same way - maybe I've just been lucky that I haven't really ran into anyone I wouldn't be willing to work with again.

Bottom line, remember the big picture. It's the direct result to the hard work and dedication you AND your vendors put in.

Happy Birthday Daddy!

Yup, I'll admit it. I've been a Daddy's Girl right from the start. He used to take me along to his rally races and pick me up in either his beautiful 20B RX7 or his beat up lancer. He used to let me "work" on his car; which basically meant me having a tool in my hand and just twiddling with the roll cage, steering wheel, or something that wouldn't really hurt me back. Those were the fondest memories I had with my dad.

I got my entrepreneurial and common business sense from him. He was always very supportive about my career dreams and goals. When I told him that I wanted to go to art school, he didn't flinch and supported my decision. He always wanted to know what I had to say about business and even asked for my advice. Knowing that he cared about my opinion despite my age showed me that he knew his daughter was on the right track. Maybe not there yet, but on the right track.

Like any dad with an only child, only daughter for that matter, he spoiled me. He gave me almost anything and everything I ever wanted. If I ever wanted anything, his motto was to "might as well get the top of the line if you're going to spend the money." He introduced and bought be my dream car. Actually, my dream car was exactly that because of his influence. With all these things that he did buy me, he still showed me the value of a dollar. He taught me that with high hopes, fearless dreams, and preparation you can reap the rewards of your hard work. That showed in his cars. Apparently, he's quite involved in the car scene and has even been featured online, in magazines, and won a handful of car shows.

Daddy, today's post is dedicated to you. You're a wonderful Father, Husband, Brother, Son, and Ninong. I love you very much and thank you for everything you do for me.

Fancy Friday: Event Lighting

I love event lighting. Why? Something as simple as lighting can completely transform the look and mood of your event. Most of the time, your venue is limited to the chandeliers or "house lights" to brighten your event and to set the mood. Relying on these lights as a source of light for the guests is usually mainly for making sure it's not pitch black in the room and so the guests can see.

Event lighting adds to the room. It gives your white walls some character, texture, and/or color. It gives you a chance to personalize your venue, highlight beautiful design elements like the cake and centerpieces, get creative, and really make a statement.

A lighting designer will not only know how to spice up your room based on your wants and needs, but they will also know the required electrical to make sure there aren't any shorts and there is enough power going to all lights. Just like any other professional, they also know the latest and greatest in their industry that can make your event something that no one has ever seen.

A Dreamer's Guide to Life: Inspiration

I can talk for days about this topic. It's a simple yet complicated subject, and it was just recently that I figured out what inspiration means to me. Inspiration can come in the form many things: people's lives, words, art, music, dance, etc. But the derivative of these things are from people and I love learning about the thoughts and concepts of people.

There are people that inspire me. Michael Jackson: I wrote a post about him in the past. Hugh Hefner: as a business man, he took a concept that people thought was feeble, unneeded, and distasteful, and has created a successful empire. Even though critics put him down and has had his own set of failures, he persevered through the pressure and is someone I can look up to because of that. My Mom: she has taught me to see the good in everyone and to find a way to connect with a person. In the context of business and friendship, I have learned to always search for the good in peers and clients alike. Without the people I've met or have been connected to I wouldn't be the person I am today or will become tomorrow. There are so many other people that inspired me, moments I hear of in people's lives that inspire me, products made by people that inspire me, the list can go on and on.

Speaking of moments, there are many moments that have left me feeling like I want to do more and be more. Even what people may see as insignificant moments could mean something to me and manifest itself into a form of inspiration. Reading a passage from a book (recommended one to read: The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch), listening to a person talk about their life, watching people dance, looking out into the ocean, seeing a beautiful photo...there are just so many different ways and outlets.

The main idea is, embrace whatever you find as a source of inspiration to be a better person or the person you want to be. It doesn't matter what people think about it as long as it inspires you. That drive that inspiration creates is an unexplainable feeling. It gets you to work harder, think optimistically, and believe in yourself.

It's okay to be afraid, it's okay to not know what's in store. People that inspire you probably didn't know either. But they got through it, and I think, it's what makes life so interesting. Success is what you make it out to be and inspiration will help you get there.

Fancy Friday: Cocktail Hour

Here's some ideas to keep your guests satisfied during your cocktail hour without going flat.

1. People love a place to sit. Aside from having tall cocktail tables, play with heights and have some short 2-seater tables and furniture with coffee tables to keep the area interesting. Instead of centerpieces on the tables, maybe put pictures from your engagement session and simple bud vases with your logo on the table

2. Get food that is easy to eat and compliments your entree menu. You don't want people to get full during the cocktail hour, so doing a "bite size" is not only economical but makes for good looking food. Another big trend is an elegant finger food, something that doesn't require extra utensils.

3. Drinks. Signature drinks are all the craze. Calling it something creative that ties in with the color scheme/theme of the wedding is a minor detail that can go a long way. Don't have the budget for a signature drink? That's ok! Take a popular cocktail and rename it! Having a wedding in the city? Serve Cosmopolitans. What about a beach wedding? Serve Mai Tai's. Vineyard wedding? Serve wine. These can be your main offerings during your cocktail hour and can save a ton on your budget!

I Guess Bad Memories and STILL Memories

This past weekend, Charlie and I went to Vegas to celebrate his birthday. What a great time. We got to see friends and spend some time together. We hit the bars, visited the automobile showroom, ate amazing food, went shopping, it was a blast. I've been making a conscious effort to make time for us - I live for the good times and memories.

One of the memories that will definitely last for the books: we were on our way to our buffet dinner (you HAVE to in Vegas right?) and as I was walking in my new dress and super-cute-wanna-be-wicker wedge heels my ankle twists, cracks, and I fall to the ground in front of everyone in front and behind us. GREAT, JUST GREAT.

First of all, I was wearing a dress and falling in a dress is never pleasant. Second of all, I twisted my ankle so much that I heard 2 loud cracks and it bent so far that I felt like my foot and my leg were perpendicular to each other. It took me a good minute to get up...MORTIFIED!!!!

Well, cheers to making memories. I guess bad memories are still memories! Here are some of my always amateur photos of the trip.

And finally, the original of my dad's car -- the RS200. This car was displayed at "The Auto Collections" at Imperial Palace. It sat alongside many classic cars in a huge showroom. Imagine, 0-60 in 2.1 seconds! One of the first things Charlie said he wanted to do was go visit the showroom. Him and my dad share a love of cars that I can only try to understand. My dad is such a huge fan of this unique car that he has a replica sitting in his garage. This one's for you, Dad.

A Dreamer's Guide to Life: Introduction

I've been wanting to do this for quite some time and have been caught up and too busy to put anything down. I must admit, I thought doing this was going to be "easy." For those of you that have read my previous post about "A Dreamer's Guide to Life," I'm stuck in a rut about it. So here I am about to make my first attempt in hopes that this can be of help to someone. If not, that's okay at least it's out there just in case. :)

Just as a side note, I want to make it known that this is just my advice. You don't have to take it or agree with my opinion. The point of this project is for me to teach something and to hopefully also learn something in the process.

Today's boring topic: the Introduction. This is why I'm here.

1. Who: ME and YOU. I want to talk about what YOU want to read. The good and the bad. The pretty and the ugly. The only thing I won't talk about is politics (too sensitive of a subject) and sex (I'd like to keep this blog as PG-13 as possible). Let me also make it known, that I believe in God. And if you don't or if you believe in something else from what I believe in, I'm open minded and am glad you believe in something. You don't have to believe in what I believe in to read these blogs.

2. What: Life -- and everything that comes along with it. Love, friendship, work, school, happiness, sadness...I want to talk about it. Sometimes people are too scared to ask (a lot of times they are) or they think know. At times you may know. But sometimes, isn't there a fear of the unknown that gets to us? Well, you're not alone. Chances are, someone has gone through it or something like it (not always, but many times). Or just because you're a unique situation doesn't mean we can't be there for you to tell us about it. Have a topic? Let me know what it is and I'll look it over.

3. Where/when: Right here...for now. This blog is the first medium I have to get this out there. Hopefully things can evolve into audio or video but until then check this blog regularly for topics.

4. Why: Because it just feels right. For me. There are things I learned the hard way that I wish someone could've told me. I wish there was a class that I could've taken on Life that could've told me certain things, even just the basics on how to take care of yourself. So here I am, I want to be that someone I wished for.

Fancy Friday: Bridesmaids have Feelings too!

I know it's your big day. And, theoretically, you can have the bridesmaids where whatever you choose. But 99% of the clients I have worked with have never wanted their bridesmaids to look tasteless in their gowns. These girls/women are, after all, the ladies that have stuck by you through thick and thin. Through the good times and the bad. Here are some new ideas (and classic time and true designs) that will make your bridesmaids happy and will make your overall wedding experience more enjoyable (I promise!).

The Twist Wrap Dress. I think this is an awesome idea. I'm even considering (keyword: CONSIDERING! My Bridesmaids, it's not a for sure decision yet! lol) What's great is the versatility of this dress. Ceremony: everyone wears a certain style. Looks great on pictures, there's a cohesive look, your girls look fabulous! Reception: people can change up the style to make them comfortable. They can go strapless, a-symmetrical, sleeved, there's a style for everyone. On top of that, the versatility goes well beyond the day of the wedding and this is ACTUALLY something that they can wear to other weddings/events (and it's actually true!). Check out these ways to twist and customize your dress by the Dessy Group.

Another great way to make your bridesmaids feel confident in what their wearing is to pick a color scheme, fabric and let them choose a style. What's great about this is bridal stores have set this up so the colors match as close as possible and there are a variety of styles to choose from. Check these styles out in "marine" by David's Bridal (note: these are just some of the styles to choose from!).

Sometimes footwear can also be an issue. Sometimes people don't feel comfortable wearing really high heels, some people feel more comfortable in a pump than an open toe, there's too many options! How do you keep them cohesive? There are the Dyeables, which will be good for the wedding day (as long as it doesn't rain) and will be good for pretty much that day and maybe one more. You can tell them to go get shoes in a certain color (i.e. black, silver, etc.) that you think will match the color scheme. The trend with cakes is simplicity with little details. A little goes a long way. Cakes have definitely changed within a few years and if you see the crazy cake shows on TV, you know what I'm talking about. Their cakes look amazing! Too bad there isn't taste-o-vision because I would definitely have a taste!

I've been a picky cake eater for as long as I can remember. No expert, albeit. It MUST be moist and the flavors HAVE to work well together. It's not just about the cake, just the filling, or just the frosting...it's the mix of all elements that makes a cake.

That being said, people's taste buds aren't always quite accepting of the flavors and tastes of more "design friendly" mediums (i.e. fondant, buttercream, etc.). Some people love it, some don't - I don't blame you, everyone has a different palette. So what's a bride/groom/host/hostess/celebrant to do? Cue the grand entrance of the faux cake!

You can now have the look you want, without compromising the taste! How? Cake designers use faux cakes many times for displays, examples, or photo shoots. Why not use it for the party? Then, you can have your tasty, non-compromising cakes in the back and have your caterer slice the cake you want the guests to enjoy and LOVE.

Save the Date cards are a great way to tell your intended guests for your wedding that it's coming up! Like any aspect of the planning, you want to make sure you put your best foot forward and make a statement. This will be one of the first things your friends and family will see, after all. Here are some ideas for save the date's that won't break the bank.

Post Cards. These are a great way to save! Postage is much less ($0.28 within the US). If you're having a destination wedding, beach wedding, outdoor wedding, or live in a major travel city these are a great idea! Many of these designs I found on Etsy (awesome site for hand made/crafted items!).

Good design will really make the statement. No matter how simple the concept, the design of your save the date will really make the difference.

Do you have guests that are more internet friendly? Send out a save the date newsletter! There are many different newsletter providers that are available and are quite affordable. With the newsletter, you can also keep your guests updated with your planning progress and send out announcements with ease! Not only that, but they're so easy to customize! Here are a few examples:

Got guests that are more interactive and really want to do something unique? Make a save the date video! With the ability of video sharing, you can do almost anything you want! From a slide show to an actual video, there are so many possibilities. Best of all, it's free to send! Just send the link of your video to your guests and let them sit back and enjoy! ABC-GLA Networking Meeting: August

This event was loads of fun! I always get a bit nervous and antsy when going to networking meetings because I'm a soloist, most of the time I go by myself. Well, to my surprise, I ran into a good friend of mine right when I walked in the door, Sarah of J & M Entertainment! She had her colleague and my new-found friend with her, Sarah (yes, 2 Sarah's) of J & M as well.

One of my memories of being young was my Grandmother and her sisters taking care of me while my parents were at work. They were all fans of the day time game shows that would play all day. D & G: Their Amazing Invites Part II

So I promised that I'd post the final product of Debbie and George's wedding invites. Finally, after my huffing and puffing about how great it looks...it's here! Well actually, I received it weeks ago and I just haven't blogged about it. Shame on me.

Their invites are sheer genius in graphic design/print form. When they told me they wanted to make a real statement with their invites while keeping simplicity at the same time I knew we had to be bold. Thanks to Jeanelle (my co-coordinator for their wedding), we came up with the concept of going chocolate brown with these invites. I knew that texture and color would play a huge role in these invites so the challenge was figuring out how to make print pop on chocolate brown paper. I knew thermography or letterpress would give it texture and we came up with the idea with adding the green satin ribbon not only for design but functionality.

Great ideas D&G! I'm glad you liked the outcome of your invites and I hope your guests enjoy them as well!

A Dreamer's Guide to Life

So, ever since The New Year of 2008 part of my resolution list is to try to figure out how I can give back to the world. I'm a firm believer that you only get as much as what you put in. Call it what you want - karma, the golden rule, etc. I like to call it common sense. I admire people that live by these beliefs and really mean it. Not just believe it, they put it into action. They talk the talk AND walk the walk. Okay, I'll stop. I think you get the idea.

Anyway, I think I've found a small way that I can make an impact. Growing up, I've always been shy. I was the girl that was too scared to raise my hand in class or speak up. I would finally get up the nerve somewhere near the end of the school year because it was only then that I felt comfortable to say a word in front of a group of people. Things have changed since then. Thanks to VENT, I've found a part of myself that I never thought would be part of my personality. I found a love for speaking. I know, who would've thought? Well actually, it might've only surprised me.

My goal: teach the things that they don't teach you in school: life, love, money, business, etc. I want to introduce my peers that can also be an inspiration to many. I want people (especially the college bound generation) to maybe see the world in a different way. I love to inspire and I love being inspired. I think this might be my way.

My Birthday Blessings

It was like I was on Cloud 9. I'm not going to sugar coat it, my life isn't easy but it's not too tough either. I always complain but I have to admit that I have many blessings and I'm learning to keep counting those. This past week was definitely a time that had countless blessings and I'm so happy for those moments.

I'm so lucky to have a wonderful fiance, family, and friends. The party started on Thursday and didn't end until Tuesday. I love celebrations (of course I would!) and the things that made these celebrations what they were was the people that I was with. Pictures of the birthday festivities will be up soon, stay tuned for those.

To everyone that wished me "Happy Birthday" and to those that had the time to celebrate with me, I can't thank you enough. All I want is to just spend time with people, and that is what I did. I love you all, you're my most valuable blessings.

RIP: The King

I actually feel like this is late, since he passed away a few weeks ago. I guess now is when I'm ready to write about it. Watching the memorial yesterday probably helped a bit too.

I'm going to do my best to not say what everyone else has (he's the greatest entertainer that ever lived, he will be missed, condolences, etc). But that will obviously be difficult due to my feeling of desolation and contemplation. I guess I'll just try to keep that section short. I'll just say that the first song I remember was "ABC 123" because of my Dad. It's amazing to me how MJ effected the lives of my Dad, my older cousins, me, and my younger cousins through his music. I still remember the performance I saw that made me respect him more than an entertainer. Everyone I talk to remembers Michael Jackson for Thriller, Billy Jean, Beat It, his Jackson 5 days, etc. But no, not me. Though as a dancer myself, I of course loved his talent in all those numbers and all his performances, that goes without saying. But what I remember most is his performance at the Super Bowl singing "Heal the World." Why? I'm not quite sure. I just remember that I saw true care for young people, old people, the world, and everything in between in his performance. I really respected that about him. He put others before himself many times. He was very selfless and giving, something I aspire to be.

Michael, millions pray for you and miss you. I guess I'm just another one of those million lives you touched. A person like you puts me in awe. What an amazing feat to be respected, admired, and loved by so many people by doing what you love. You bring people together from all walks of life, you inspire me to be a great person and to give 100% in everything I do. Thank you.

D & G: Their Amazing Invites

Dolce and Gabana? Nah, Debbie and George. Their invites (printed by moi and Charlie's wholesale companies) and designed by Deb and George themselves have finally arrived! I love their sense of style, very similar to mine: modern, sleek, simple, and in your face. We had a mini-invite party last week to put the assets together and this awesome DIY bride got through them and finished the following day!

These chocolate brown invites were letter pressed and the inner pearl pages were laser printed. The green ribbon is hand-attached to complete the color-scheme and give a softer look. The envelopes are hand-stamped with a gold return address and addressed with gold labels to keep the design cohesive. Awesome design down to every detail!

I'm waiting for my invite to come in the mail. More pictures to come when it arrives!

Technology and Events -- Part I

I wrote an article about 2 years ago about technology and weddings. I honestly can't believe that in that short amount of time there are now even more technological avenues to utilize. As a business owner and being involved in the wedding/event industry, it's exciting how the world of technology is having a direct effect on things in the bubble I call my life.

As a business woman, I believe you have to keep up and be resourceful. I'm a technology geek (not full blown, but pretty interested). Technology is quite different even from a few years ago and the internet has been such a useful resource to me. Because of the internet, I can connect with friends that I haven't seen/heard from in years, I can keep in contact with family and friends all over the world, and they can keep up with me. The endless ability to reach people far and wide is jaw dropping. Here are just some of the things that I've seen or am a part of.

Those are the ones just off the top of my head. There are so many more, and that's just for my business/event planning life. Why is this important you ask? It may not be. But to "techies" like myself, it's a way to stay connected and to put a face on a company. I've never been one to impose my services or personality on anyone, but if someone is interested I'm not afraid to share a little bit of myself with another person. I'm a pretty open book. I believe in making a connection with people and I believe one of the only ways to do that is to share some of yourself. I guess that's why I'm in the business that I'm in.

What's important to me is to establish a personality for my company. I want everyone to know that with my company, comes my style, persona, quirks, and all. In a business like mine, working with different personalities is a way for me to further discover things about myself. The challenge of getting to know a person and understanding their likes and dislikes is exactly why I believe that personality is so important.

A website can show a little bit about you, but isn't as personal as a blog, or a profile. Through the evolution of websites, I feel that a company website is just meant to brush the surface and give enough information to intrigue. With social networking, I feel like you can get a taste of what I'm about, and hopefully because or despite those things you find out about me, you can make a decision.

The Wedding Planner's Engaged!

I think the headline sums it up pretty well. And it gives me a chance to put it out there: yes! I'm a wedding planner that plans weddings because I love weddings, not because I planned my own wedding. And for those that have asked, of course I'm hiring a wedding planner! =)

ABC-GLA meeting: Liene Stevens

This was my first meeting with ABC. In my own right, I was a bit nervous and didn’t know what to expect. The traffic getting to the Andaz was causing my anticipation to build and caused me to keep running different scenarios in my head. Thankfully, when I got there, my nerves eased while I walked around the room looking at the snacks, centerpieces, and little details of the event. The pieces you see above were creations by Carissa (yes, we share the same name!) of JL Designs. The other picture is the beautiful view from the penthouse level of the Andaz.

I have heard of Liene but never have really looked into her company, who she was, or what she’s done. I must say, she knows her stuff! I learned a lot of things that I didn't know and admire her knowledge, advice, and realistic approach to planning and speaking. I’m really glad I went to hear her speak and to check out the Andaz venue. It was nice to meet everyone and I hope to meet more of the members soon!

Wedding Cake Ideas

People often forget about this part of the “tiny details.” The cake is an important part of tradition in weddings. These traditions date back to the Roman era when loaves of bread were used and broken over the couple to signify prosperity and long life. The guests would also try to take pieces of the loaves so they can also share in the prosperity of the couple.

Since then, cakes have transformed into a very important part of the reception festivities. The act of slicing and sharing a piece of cake together signifies unity and care for each other. The cake itself an edible work of art.

I’ve been surrounded by cakes my whole life. My aunt has been baking cakes even before my days walking this Earth working at the family bake shop in the Philippines. Since then, she’s honed her craft and recently opened a shop in Granada Hills with my parents to carry on the legacy here in the US (www.ninongspastries.com). She taught me that cakes have to be 2 things: DELICIOUS and BEAUTIFUL.

Sometimes cakes aren’t the most important thing to people, but I believe it is. This is one of the important parts of the celebration of a wedding, and it’s something that you share with the guests that mean so much to you.

There are so many ways to get creative with cakes. The shape, the flavor, the cake topper, the colors, the embellishments, the base, the height, the list goes on. Designers have definitely been pushing the bar with their cakes and moving from the traditional white/off white cake. Some are in full color, some with hints of the traditional with a new modern twist. Some cakes are all edible with gum paste flowers and decor, some cakes have fun non-edible embellishments.

The world of weddings is changing, but the growth in the creativity of wedding cakes is amazing. The future of wedding cakes is limitless and will continue to evolve as the years go by. I can’t wait to see what else people will be coming up with.

25 Years of Marriage, Congrats Mom and Dad!

What a weekend. I’ve been planning this party for my parents for almost a year. This past Saturday, it finally happened.

My parents have been married for 25 years as of May 12, 2009. They’re hard working, wonderful people. As parents, they gave me everything and almost anything I ever wanted and needed. They recently opened a Bakery and Cafe (www.ninongspastries.com) in late 2008 and the shop has been taking all of their time. I get my love of parties from my mom, and I knew she wanted to have a party for their anniversary, but where would she even get the time to do it? She’s not only at the shop 50% of the time. The other 50% she works as a Realtor (which she’s proudly been doing for over 15 years).

So, I decided to take it upon myself to plan their anniversary for them. It was tough to keep it a secret, but thanks to the rest of the family we pulled it together. People came from out of town and from down the street. Everyone pitched in and I was touched to see how many people wanted to help. I couldn’t do it without them. It really shows me much my parents are loved by their friends. Even those that regretted they couldn’t make it were disappointed that they couldn’t come.

Vendors: How do I pick?

This is a concern of many people. How do I know which vendor is the right pick? Here’s some advice on how to sort through all those vendors. (Please remember, DE has wonderful vendors that we’ve met and worked with along the way. However, DE is not responsible for any conflicts between other vendors and clients. We solely act as a mediator between vendor and client and works in the best interest of BOTH parties.)

1. Take the small steps to achieve the big picture. Looking at daunting tasks in small steps is usually more efficient. Don’t approach all vendors at the same time. Work category by category, but efficiently. Your consultant can help you organize when to approach certain vendors.

2. Ask questions. Vendors are here to answer questions and to tell you more about what they do. They welcome questions as well as asking you questions because it helps them hone in on the important stuff. Put a list together to make sure you get your bases covered and ask all the questions you have in mind. There are never any “stupid” questions but if you feel embarrassed to ask someone a question, that’s what your consultant is there for. We either have the answer or are more than willing to ask the question for you.

3. Contact a few vendors at a time. Interview about 3 vendors in the same category. If you think one of the vendors don’t match with your needs or personality, move on to the next one. Please remember, people like to be kept in the know. Let people know whether or not you have made a decision or kindly decline their services.

4. Do your research. There are so many methods to finding vendors. Online, trade shows, word of mouth, etc. Each method has its pros and cons, and I personally don’t prefer one over the other. Some advice - when researching online, there are literally hundreds of resources to look through. Try to keep perspective when searching so you don’t get overwhelmed. When attending trade shows, don’t be afraid of speaking to the vendors. Trade shows are meant to give you one outlet where you can see service providers and retails in a face-to-face environment. Take your time, you never know what you can learn or take from a person. What’s great too, is that they sometimes have specials that they are offering as a “trade show special.” Word of mouth: some people completely trust this method. I do as well, but one thing to remember is that someone’s preference might not be the same as yours. The vendor’s chemistry might have been great for one client, but might not match with another. Make sure you ask questions and get to know vendors regardless of which method you find them. Many times, your consultant can recommend the right vendors and do the “brunt work” of the research for you to save time. We can narrow vendors down based on budget, wants, personality, and needs.

5. Chemistry. I believe it’s one of the most important things to consider when hiring anyone. Every professional you work with should be someone you trust will do the job you contract them to do, and ultimately, shares and understands the same vision you have. The price, personality, package of goods/services, and reliability have to be right for you.

Technology has come very far in the recent years and the wedding industry isn’t exempt from being effected. Take a look at some great ways to incorporate technology into your wedding.

1. Wedding Slideshows. Many photographers and videographers provide this service. They allow your guests to see significant moments in your life separately and together. Many people enjoy this feature because it gives their guests an insight of the bride and groom’s life. It gives your guests a chance to know you.
2. Online Registry. Many stores now allow your guests to view your registry online. Providing this on your wedding website is a great way for you to appropriate suggest your guests to look at a registry as providing registry information in your invitations is not considered proper etiquette.
3. Song Lists. Many couples have specific requests (as they should) regarding the music selection for their wedding. With technology now, you can provide your DJ with a CD or iPod with the songs that you specifically want played.
4. Décor. Many things can be incorporated into your décor to add flair to any event. Lighting adds a extra touch to set the mood for your wedding. Use battery operated tea lights for an outdoor wedding – they last the entire event and never blow out on a windy day. Creating a custom gobo with your monogram can be used to travel around the room. LED lights can now give your centerpieces and floral designs a beautiful glow. The list is endless and just needs a personal touch.

Wedding Dress Advice

There are infinite amounts of different wedding dresses for a bride to choose from but knowing the right style that is most flattering on their body might be the most challenging. There are so many decisions to make about the cut, the train, the neckline...it can tend to be overwhelming. Doing your research regarding the type of dress that appeals to you and the type of dress that will look good on your body will help prepare you when you make your trip to the bridal store. Though there are countless amounts of dresses, there are the basic dress types.

1. Ball Gown: I hear many people call it the "Cinderella" dress. This dress is easily characterized by its full skirt coming from the waist or hip accompanied with a corset style bodice. The style most commonly fits pear-shaped, full, and thin figures. However, this style is one of the more versatile styles for all figures.

2. A Line: This style is usually characterized by its smooth transition from bodice to skirt. The skirt is also a full skirt but is smaller in size than the Ball Gown. This is the most flattering for all body types except for women that do not have a defined waist line.

3. Empire: Its waist line moves from waist to underneath the bust creating a more fitted bust line followed by a smooth skirt. A common material for these types of dresses in a flowy chiffon. This dress is most pleasing to women with no defined waist line and petite women. Because of the fitted bust bodice, it creates the look of being taller.

4. Sheath: This dress style is recommended for the petite woman because it also creates the look of being taller. Its cut is very thin and hugs every curve, sometimes with a pencil skirt.

5. Mermaid: Though very similar to the Sheath dress type, there is one difference it its charcteristics - the bottom. The bottom of the dress, usually beginning at the knee, is flared and wider than the sheath style.

Advice when dress shopping:
1. Though there are styles that compliment all body types, I always advise to go with your gut instinct. Even if people say that your body type "doesn't go" with the particular style you like, try it on. You will never know unless you try. If they were right move on and try something else, but if they were wrong you'll be happy to know that your instincts were correct.
2. Don't go dress shopping after you've purchased your dress because most of the time it'll just confuse you. Do all the shopping before the purchase. Many shops have a no return policy so you might lose the money you've invested in the one you already know you loved.
3. When going dress shopping for the first time, take one person with you. It helps your gown consultant find out what you like instead of what your friends/family like. When you've narrowed down your selection, invite everyone to help choose.
4. Have fun! This experience is supposed to be one of the funnest parts of planning!

Wedding Planner Misconceptions

The wedding planning industry is a very misunderstood profession. The most common misconception is that wedding planners are there to take complete control of your wedding, including making decisions without the couple about creative, business, and money aspects. If you are working with an experienced wedding planner, this is absolutely not true unless you want them to take that much control over your wedding. A good wedding planner is your side-kick during this experience. We're not there for anything but guidance, professional advice, and assistance.

Many people also think that they don't need a wedding planner. While every person is different, I believe everyone needs a little help somewhere. Someone might need help from the beginning, the middle, or the end. A popular service many wedding planners now provide is "Day-Of Coordination." In this service, we are there to be your "eyes and ears" while you, your family, and your friends get ready, take pictures, and enjoy your day. I would say at the least, this would be a valuable service to anyone.

Another common trend that is coming around is wedding coordinators that are included in a package offered at a venue. While these coordinators are wonderful, they only help with your ceremony and reception set up and tear down. They will also help with asking you what time you would like the toast to occur, what time you would like to serve dinner, etc. However, they do not help with the other vendors and planning like a wedding planner would. While these wedding coordinators and your wedding planner work very well together on the day of, the facility wedding coordinator will refer to your wedding planner so they can relay any delays or issues to the correct people. But what about your DJ, is he there? What time is he setting up? Is your florist using the correct flowers for the arrangements? Did the correct chair covers arrive? While everyone is entitled to their opinion, the fact of the matter is that your invitation sets the mood of your wedding before your guests even attend. Here are some frequently asked questions that I get from brides and grooms.

Q: Do I need to order an invitation for every guest?
A: Absolutely not. Don't forget that many people that are on your guest list are couples or families, therefore, you will only need to order 1 invitation for 2 or more guests. I would say that you will need to order 65% of the amount on your guest list.

Q: Can I send my invitations through the internet?
A: It is improper to send an invitation through e-mail or internet, especially because it is an unreliable source of contact. People might not receive your e-mail or message. However, you may send out of town information, directions, hotel information, and other things through the internet.

Q: When should I send out our invitations?
A: 6 to 8 weeks before the wedding.

Q: Can I let my guests know I am registered in my invitations?
A: This is not proper etiquette. Registration information is never proper to enclose in your invitation. You may add it to your wedding website (if you have one), or you may tell them if they ask you. You can also use your close family members (mom, sisters, etc.) to spread the word if people ask them as well.

Q: I want to have a small wedding and I only want to invite certain people. How do I limit my guest list?

Work with a wedding consultant. Any wedding consultant that is worth working with has a wonderful database of vendors. Many times, we have relationships set up with our preferred vendors because we always bring them repeat customers. Not only do we recommend them, but we know that they are ready, capable, and professional!

Have your wedding during a "slow time" of the season. The busy part of the wedding season is usually May through October (depending on your location). Many vendors have discounts or lower rates for the "off season." Also, consider having your wedding on any day other than a Saturday. Sundays are beginning to be a popular day to have weddings since the cost is much less than a Saturday.

Be realistic. Sometimes people want to take on projects themselves because they think it will save money. While this is sometimes true, they forget about the time and dedication it takes to prepare these things. After buying supplies, they realize they didn't get around to it and end up ordering whatever it was they planned on making. We've also seen situations where people attempt a project with good intentions, but it didn't come out the way they planned. Make sure you think about whether you do have the time to do the things you commit to. There are many things that are going on at the same time, but if you can do it yourself, by all means do it! Limit your host bar to 1 to 2 hours. There are even some locations that include a 1-2 hour host bar in some of their packages. If you limit that time you will not only save money, but also possibly keep your guests safe from drunk driving.

Save on postage.If at all possible, personally deliver your invitations. This will not only save the cost of stamps, but will also give you an opportunity to catch up with friends and family and let them congratulate you in person.

Organize your guestlist. I don't advise people to cut their list, but I always have people organize and break their list down into 3 categories -- a.) Those who must be invited, b.) Those who should be invited, and c.) Those who would be nice to invite. This will not only keep you well organized, but also figure out how many people are in each category and will help with your final count.

Get a block rate for out of town guests. Usually hotels are happy to do this for you as long as you do it in advance and they have availability. Also, they might have a wedding package available; for example, if you block a certain amount of rooms, you can get yours for free or updated to a suite for no extra charge.

Save on attire. There are many ways to accomplish this. If your soon-to-be husband doesn't want to purchase a tuxedo, go to a rental place that offers a "free groom's tuxedo" special. If you don't want to purchase a designer or couture gown, go to an outlet store or on Ebay and purchase your gown there.
